As a leader, how do you look at people?
- Do you look at them as people generally do, by their outward appearance?
- Or, do you look at them as God does, by their heart?
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. 1Sam 16:7
What does it mean to look at someone’s heart? It means to consider their motives.
Do they do things out of
- self-interest?
- obligation?
- guilt?
- fear?
- love? (Eph 6:6)
Of course, you’ll need to ask God to help you determine motives. He’s the One who sees everyone’s hearts.
It’s also a helpful exercise to consider why you, as a leader, do the things you do.
