For leaders, discernment is crucial because our ability to discern affects others.
I haven’t found a formula for developing discernment; however, Scripture gives us clues for how we can hone discernment.
- Desire the Truth: To develop discernment, you must earnestly desire the truth according to God’s Word, John 16:13. This means you shouldn’t approach His Word to prove what you already think or want to be the truth.
- Practice Constantly: God reserves solid food for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice, Heb 5:14. For discernment to grow, you must apply God’s Truth, Psa 86:11. It’s not easy, Luke 14:27.
- Listen to the Spirit: It’s not about your effort as much as it is about releasing control to the Holy Spirit. It takes the Holy Spirit to discern spiritual things, 1Cor 2:14. You must be sensitive to God’s voice. This may mean you go against your natural emotions or defy what others view as logical.
