Build Trust

Some people tell me that others should trust them until they prove they can’t be trusted.

I think they have this backwards.

We must earn trust. Consider Paul’s example, Gal 1:15-2:10.

Before Paul began to defend the gospel, he spent several years learning from God. He also spent time with Barnabas, a trusted leader. Then, Paul had a private conversation with the leaders in Jerusalem to tell them how God had called him to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. Paul stuck to the truth of what God told him, despite some detractors trying to force unnecessary rules on the Gentiles.

James, Peter, and John perceived that Paul was indeed doing God’s work. They encouraged him.

Before you took on a leadership role for God:

  • Did you spend a generous amount of time seeking His guidance and allowing Him to prepare you for the challenges?
  • Did you find a trusted leader to serve as a mentor?
  • Were you determined to do things God’s way?

Have you continued:

  • learning from God (Bible study, prayer, doing what He asks)?
  • connecting with other Christ-followers for mutual encouragement and accountability?
  • speaking the truth in love to detractors as you do things God’s way?

If you answered “yes,” it’s a strong indicator that you are building trust.
